The Chinese word 文学 (wénxué) for "literature" is composed of two characters: 文 (wén) and 学 (xué). The character 文 originally meant "pattern" or "design", and was later extended to mean "culture" or "civilization". The character 学 originally meant "to learn", and was later extended to mean "study" or "scholarship". Thus, the compound word 文学 literally means "the study of culture" or "the study of civilization".In modern Chinese, 文学 is used to refer to a wide range of literary works, including novels, short stories, poems, essays, and dramas. It can also be used to refer to the study of literature as an academic discipline.
