The Chinese word "员工" (yuán gōng) is composed of two characters: "员" (yuán) and "工" (gōng). The character "员" originally meant "official" or "staff member", and was often used in ancient Chinese to refer to government officials. The character "工" originally meant "work" or "labor", and was often used to refer to skilled workers or craftsmen. Over time, the meaning of "员工" evolved to refer to any type of employee, regardless of their position or occupation. Today, "员工" is the most common word used in Chinese to refer to employees in general.
