The Chinese word 资源 (zīyuán) is a compound of two characters: 资 (zī) and 源 (yuán). 资 (zī) originally meant "wealth" or "property", and later extended to mean "resources" or "capital". 源 (yuán) originally meant "source" or "spring", and later extended to mean "origin" or "beginning". Thus, the word 资源 (zīyuán) literally means "source of wealth" or "origin of capital". In modern Chinese, 资源 (zīyuán) is used to refer to natural resources, such as minerals, forests, and water, as well as to economic resources, such as labor, capital, and technology.
