Étymologie et composants

The Chinese character 副 (fù) is composed of two parts: 亻(rén) and 衤 (fú). The radical 亻(rén) on the left side indicates that the character is related to a person. The phonetic component 衤 (fú) on the right side is a simplified form of the character 覆 (fù), which means "to cover" or "to turn over". When combined, the two components of 副 (fù) create a character that means "deputy", "assistant", or "secondary". This is because a deputy or assistant is someone who stands in for or covers for another person. The character 副 (fù) can also be used to mean "additional" or "extra", as in the phrase 副产品 (fùchǎnpǐn), which means "by-product".
