The Chinese word 培育 (péiyù) is composed of two characters: 培 (péi) and 育 (yù). The character 培 originally meant "to add soil to a mound or embankment" and later extended to mean "to cultivate" or "to nurture". The character 育 originally meant "to give birth to" or "to raise" and later extended to mean "to educate" or "to foster". Thus, the word 培育 (péiyù) literally means "to cultivate and nurture" and is often used in the context of education, agriculture, or animal husbandry. For example, it can be used to describe the process of raising crops or livestock, or the process of educating children.
