The Chinese word 社区 (shèqū) for "community" is composed of two characters: 社 (shè) and 区 (qū). The character 社 originally meant "altar of the land and grain" in ancient China, where people would gather to worship the gods of the land and pray for a good harvest. Over time, the meaning of 社 expanded to include the people who lived in the area around the altar, and eventually came to refer to a community or village. The character 区 (qū) originally meant "a section or division of land," and was often used to refer to a district or neighborhood within a city. When the two characters are combined, 社区 (shèqū) takes on the meaning of "community," referring to a group of people who live in a particular area and share common interests and values.
