Étymologie et composants

The Chinese word 死亡 (sǐwáng) for "death" is composed of two characters: 死 (sǐ) and 亡 (wáng). The character 死 originally meant "to stop breathing" or "to cease to exist", and was often used in ancient Chinese texts to refer to the death of a person. The character 亡 originally meant "to perish" or "to be destroyed", and was often used in ancient Chinese texts to refer to the destruction of a country or a dynasty. Over time, the two characters came to be used together to refer to the death of a person, and the compound word 死亡 became the standard Chinese word for "death".
