The Chinese word 天文 (tiānwén) for "astronomy" is a compound of two characters: 天 (tiān), meaning "heaven" or "sky", and 文 (wén), meaning "pattern" or "writing". The term 天文 was first used in ancient China to refer to the study of celestial phenomena, including the movements of the sun, moon, and stars, as well as the patterns of the constellations. Over time, the meaning of 天文 expanded to include the study of the entire universe, including the planets, galaxies, and other celestial objects. Today, 天文 is the standard Chinese term for astronomy.
