The Chinese word 维生素 (wéishēngsù) for "vitamin" is a compound of 维 (wéi), meaning "to maintain" or "to preserve", and 生素 (shēngsù), meaning "life element" or "vital substance". The term was coined in 1912 by the Chinese biochemist Wu Lien-teh, who was inspired by the English word "vitamine", which was itself derived from the Latin word "vita" (life) and the suffix "-amine" (amine). Wu's coinage was based on the idea that vitamins are essential for maintaining life and promoting good health. The term 维生素 has since become the standard Chinese word for "vitamin" and is widely used in both scientific and everyday contexts.
