The Chinese word for "cell" is 细胞 (xìbāo), which is composed of two characters: 细 (xì) and 胞 (bāo). The character 细 means "fine" or "small", while the character 胞 means "sac" or "container". Together, these two characters form the word 细胞, which literally means "a small sac" or "a small container". This term was coined in the late 19th century by the Chinese scientist Xu Shou, who was inspired by the English word "cell". The term 细胞 has since become the standard Chinese word for "cell" and is used in all fields of science and medicine.
