Étymologie et composants

The Chinese character 胖 (pàng) for "fat" is composed of two parts: the radical ⾍ (rì), which means "sun," and the phonetic component 旁 (páng), which means "side." The character 胖 originally meant "to be exposed to the sun," and later came to mean "to be fat." This is because in ancient China, people who were exposed to the sun for long periods of time would often become dark-skinned and overweight. The character 胖 is also used in the sense of "rich" or "wealthy," as in the phrase 胖乎乎 (pànghūhū), which means "plump and prosperous."
