The Chinese word 追究 (zhuījiū) is composed of two characters: 追 (zhuī) and 究 (jiū). The character 追 originally meant "to catch up" or "to pursue", and later extended to mean "to investigate" or "to inquire". The character 究 originally meant "to reach the end" or "to investigate thoroughly", and later extended to mean "to pursue" or "to seek". When combined, the two characters 追究 form a compound word that means "to investigate thoroughly" or "to pursue to the end". In legal contexts, it can also mean "to hold (someone) accountable" or "to bring (someone) to justice".
