Étymologie et composants

The Chinese character 部 (bù) is composed of two parts: 亻(rén) and 符 (fú). The left component 亻(rén) represents a person, while the right component 符 (fú) means "tally" or "token". Together, they form the character 部 (bù), which originally meant "a part of a group" or "a section". In ancient China, a tally was a split piece of wood or bamboo that was used as a token or proof of identity. When two people made an agreement, they would each keep one half of the tally. When they met again, they would fit the two halves together to verify their identities. This concept of a tally is reflected in the character 部 (bù), which represents a part of a whole or a section of a group. Over time, the meaning of 部 (bù) expanded to include "department", "ministry", "branch", and "category". It is also used as a suffix to indicate a group or category of things, such as 部队 (bùduì, "troops") and 部门 (bùmén, "department").
