Étymologie et composants

The Chinese character 村 (cūn) for "village" is composed of two parts: 囗 (wéi) and 屯 (tún). 囗 represents an enclosure, symbolizing the boundary of a village. 屯 originally meant "to station troops" or "to gather together". When combined, 村 suggests a place where people gather and live together within a defined area. The earliest written form of 村 can be traced back to oracle bone inscriptions from the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600–1046 BC). In these inscriptions, 村 was used to refer to a military camp or a garrison. Over time, the meaning of 村 gradually shifted to refer to a permanent settlement or a village. In modern Chinese, 村 is commonly used to refer to a rural settlement smaller than a town. It can also be used in a broader sense to refer to a community or a group of people living in a specific area. For example, the term "全球村" (quánqiú cūn) is used to describe the interconnectedness of the world in the age of globalization.
