Étymologie et composants

The Chinese character 单 (dān) is composed of two parts: the radical 亻(rén) and the phonetic component 丹 (dān). The radical 亻represents a person, while the phonetic component 丹 originally meant "red" or "cinnabar". When combined, the character 单 takes on the meaning of "single" or "alone". This is because in ancient China, people often used red cinnabar to mark important documents or objects, and these marked items were considered to be unique or special. Over time, the character 单 came to be used more broadly to refer to anything that is one of a kind or exists by itself. In modern Chinese, 单 is commonly used in words such as 单身 (dānshēn, "single"), 单独 (dān dú, "alone"), and 单程 (dān chéng, "one-way"). It can also be used as a noun to refer to a single item or unit, such as 一单生意 (yī dān shēngyì, "a single piece of business").
