The Chinese word 动画 (dònghuà) for "animation" is a compound of two characters: 动 (dòng) meaning "to move" and 画 (huà) meaning "picture" or "drawing". The term 动画 was coined in the early 20th century to describe the art of creating moving images through a series of drawn or painted frames. It is a relatively new word, as animation itself is a relatively new art form. The earliest known examples of animation date back to the 19th century, and the first animated films were produced in the early 20th century. The word 动画 has been used in Chinese since the 1920s, and it is now the standard term for animation in Chinese.
