The Chinese word 动物园 (dòngwùyuán) for "zoo" is a compound of two characters: 动物 (dòngwù), meaning "animal", and 园 (yuán), meaning "garden" or "park". The term "动物园" first appeared in the late 19th century, during the Qing dynasty, as a translation of the Western concept of a zoological garden. The term was coined by the Chinese scholar and translator Yan Fu (1854-1921), who was inspired by the Japanese word 動物園 (dōbutsuen), which had been borrowed from the English word "zoological garden". The term 动物园 quickly gained popularity in China and became the standard term for "zoo".
