The Chinese word 高于 (gāoyú) is composed of two characters: 高 (gāo) and 于 (yú). The character 高 originally meant "tall" or "high", and was often used to describe mountains or buildings. Over time, it came to be used more figuratively, to describe things that were superior or excellent. The character 于 originally meant "to" or "towards", and was often used to indicate direction or purpose. When combined, the two characters 高于 literally mean "higher than" or "superior to". In modern Chinese, 高于 is used to compare two things and indicate that one is superior to the other. For example, we can say "这座山高于那座山" (zhè zuò shān gāoyú nà zuò shān) to mean "This mountain is higher than that mountain".
