Étymologie et composants

The Chinese word 机器人 (jīqìrén) for "robot" is a compound of two characters: 机器 (jīqì), meaning "machine", and 人 (rén), meaning "person". The term was first coined in 1920 by the Czech writer Karel Čapek in his play R.U.R. (Rossum's Universal Robots), which was translated into Chinese in 1934. The word 机器人 was chosen as a translation of the Czech word "robot", which is derived from the Slavic word "robota", meaning "forced labor" or "drudgery". The term 机器人 was popularized in China in the 1950s and 1960s, when the country began to develop its own robotics industry. Today, the word 机器人 is used to refer to any type of machine that is capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically, especially one programmable by a computer.
