Étymologie et composants

The Chinese character 剪 (jiǎn) for "scissors" is composed of two parts: 金 (jīn) and 欠 (qiàn). 金 originally meant "metal" and was used to represent anything made of metal, including scissors. 欠, on the other hand, originally meant "to owe" or "to lack" and was used to represent the shape of the blades of scissors, which are like two open mouths. When combined, 金 and 欠 form the character 剪, which represents the tool used for cutting, namely scissors.
