The Chinese word 周末 (zhōumò) for "weekend" is composed of two characters: 周 (zhōu) and 末 (mò). 周 originally meant "complete" or "whole", and was used to refer to a cycle of time, such as a week or a year. 末 originally meant "end" or "tip", and was used to refer to the last day of a cycle. Together, 周末 literally means "the end of the week", and is used to refer to the two days at the end of the work week, typically Saturday and Sunday.
