Étymologie et composants

The Chinese character 立 (lì) means "to stand" or "to establish". It is composed of two parts: the radical 木 (mù), which means "wood", and the phonetic component 力 (lì), which means "strength". The character 立 is first seen in oracle bone script, the earliest form of Chinese writing. In oracle bone script, 立 is depicted as a person standing with their arms outstretched. The character 立 has retained its basic meaning of "to stand" throughout its history. It is also used in a number of extended meanings, such as "to establish", "to create", and "to set up". For example, the word 立法 (lìfǎ) means "to legislate", and the word 立国 (lìguó) means "to found a country". The character 立 is also used in a number of idioms and proverbs. For example, the idiom 立竿见影 (lìgān jiàn yǐng) means "to see immediate results", and the proverb 立志当存高远 (lìzhì dāngcún gāoyuǎn) means "one should set lofty goals for oneself".
