Étymologie et composants

The Chinese word 排球 (páiqiú) for volleyball is a compound of two characters: 排 (pái) and 球 (qiú). The character 排 (pái) means "to arrange" or "to line up", while the character 球 (qiú) means "ball". Together, the two characters 排球 (páiqiú) literally mean "to arrange balls" or "to line up balls". This is a reference to the way that volleyball is played, with players on two teams hitting the ball back and forth over a net.The word 排球 (páiqiú) was first used in China in the early 20th century. It is believed to have been borrowed from the Japanese word バレーボール (barēbōru), which in turn was borrowed from the English word "volleyball". The Chinese word 排球 (páiqiú) is now the standard term for volleyball in China and is also used in other Chinese-speaking countries and regions.
