The Chinese character 判 (pàn) is composed of two parts: 攵 (pū) and 半 (bàn). 攵 is a radical that indicates an action related to hitting or striking, while 半 means "half". Together, they form the character 判, which originally meant "to divide or split in half". In ancient China, judges would use a wooden stick to divide a piece of wood in half as a way of settling disputes, hence the association of 判 with the concept of judgment. Over time, the meaning of 判 expanded to include the ideas of "to judge", "to decide", and "to sentence". Today, it is commonly used in legal contexts, as well as in everyday speech to refer to making a decision or expressing an opinion.
