The Chinese word 气体 (qìtǐ) for "gas" is a compound of two characters: 气 (qì) and 体 (tǐ). The character 气 originally meant "vapor" or "steam", and was later extended to mean "air" or "atmosphere". The character 体 originally meant "body" or "substance", and was later extended to mean "form" or "state". Thus, the compound 气体 literally means "air-like substance" or "gaseous state".The word 气体 was first used in the 19th century to translate the English word "gas". It is now the standard Chinese word for "gas" in all scientific and technical contexts.
