Étymologie et composants

The Chinese word 图书 (túshū) for "books" is composed of two characters: 图 (tú) and 书 (shū). The character 图 originally meant "map" or "drawing", and it is composed of the radical 土 (tǔ) for "earth" and the phonetic component 甫 (fǔ). The character 书 originally meant "to write" or "to record", and it is composed of the radical 竹 (zhú) for "bamboo" and the phonetic component 聿 (yù).When combined, the characters 图 and 书 form the compound word 图书, which literally means "drawings and writings". This term was originally used to refer to maps and other illustrated works, but it gradually came to be used more broadly to refer to books in general. In modern Chinese, 图书 is the most common word for "books", and it is used in a variety of contexts, including libraries, bookstores, and schools.
