The Chinese word 相片 (xiàngpiàn) for "photograph" is a compound of two characters: 相 (xiàng), meaning "mutual" or "resembling," and 片 (piàn), meaning "a slice" or "a piece." Together, these characters convey the idea of a "mutual slice" or "a slice that resembles something." This is a fitting name for a photograph, as it is a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional object. The word 相片 was coined in the late 19th century, when photography was first introduced to China. It is a relatively new word, but it has quickly become the standard term for "photograph" in Chinese.
