Étymologie et composants

The Chinese word 星期天 (xīng qī tiān) literally means "star period day". It is derived from the ancient Chinese belief that the movement of stars and planets influenced human affairs. The word 星期 (xīng qī) originally referred to the seven days of the week, which were named after the seven visible planets in the night sky: 日 (rì) for the Sun, 月 (yuè) for the Moon, 火 (huǒ) for Mars, 水 (shuǐ) for Mercury, 木 (mù) for Jupiter, 金 (jīn) for Venus, and 土 (tǔ) for Saturn. The word 天 (tiān) means "day". So, 星期天 literally means "the day of the star period". Over time, the meaning of 星期天 evolved to refer specifically to Sunday, the seventh day of the week.
