The Chinese word 学院 (xuéyuàn) for "academy" or "college" is composed of two characters: 学 (xué), meaning "study" or "learn", and 院 (yuàn), meaning "courtyard" or "enclosure". The character 学 (xué) has a long history in Chinese, dating back to the Shang dynasty (c. 1600-1046 BC), when it was used to refer to the act of learning or studying. The character 院 (yuàn) also has a long history, dating back to the Zhou dynasty (c. 1046-256 BC), when it was used to refer to a courtyard or enclosed space. The combination of these two characters, 学 (xué) and 院 (yuàn), creates the word 学院 (xuéyuàn), which refers to a place of learning or study, such as an academy or college.
