Étymologie et composants

The Chinese character 洋 (yáng) is composed of two parts: 氵(shuǐ) and 羊 (yáng). The radical 氵(shuǐ) indicates that the character is related to water, while the phonetic component 羊 (yáng) provides a clue to its pronunciation. The original meaning of 洋 (yáng) was "ocean" or "vast body of water". In modern Chinese, it has extended to mean "foreign" or "Western". This is because in the past, most foreign goods and ideas came from across the ocean. Therefore, the character 洋 (yáng) came to be associated with things that are foreign or Western.
