The Chinese word 宇航员 (yǔhángyuán) is composed of three characters: 宇 (yǔ), 航 (háng), and 员 (yuán). 宇 means "universe" or "space", 航 means "to sail" or "to navigate", and 员 means "person" or "member". Together, these characters form the term "astronaut", which refers to a person who travels into space. The term 宇航员 was first used in China in the 1950s, when the country began its space program. It was derived from the Russian word "космонавт" (kosmonavt), which was coined in the Soviet Union in the 1930s. The Chinese term 宇航员 is now widely used in China and other Chinese-speaking countries to refer to astronauts. In addition to 宇航员, there are several other Chinese words that are used to refer to astronauts. These include 航天员 (hángtiānyuán), which means "space traveler", and 太空人 (tàikōngrén), which means "space person". However, 宇航员 is the most common and widely used term for astronaut in Chinese.
