The Chinese word 指头 (zhǐtou) for "finger" is composed of two characters: 指 (zhǐ) and 头 (tóu). The character 指 originally meant "to point" or "to indicate", and was often used in the sense of "to point with the finger". The character 头 originally meant "head", but was also used in the sense of "end" or "tip". When these two characters are combined, they form the word 指头, which literally means "the tip of the finger". This word is used to refer to the fingers of the hand, as well as the toes of the foot.
