The Chinese word 气候 (qìhòu) for "climate" is composed of two characters: 气 (qì) and 候 (hòu). 气 originally meant "vapor" or "air" and was later extended to mean "atmosphere" or "weather". 候 originally meant "to wait" or "to expect" and was later extended to mean "season" or "time". Thus, 气候 literally means "the atmosphere and the seasons" and refers to the long-term patterns of weather conditions in a particular area.
